A 12-year-old Basic 6 pupil has been impregnated by her elder sister’s boyfriend, Francis Damptey, a married man involved in galamsey. The victim lived with her sister Christiana Yeboah after her mother’s death.
Damptey slept with both sisters, impregnating the young girl while pressuring Christiana to abort repeatedly. When school officials learned of the affair, the girl’s father, Boateng Sekyere, tried to cover it up to avoid embarrassment, even threatening curses on anyone pursuing it.
Now three months pregnant, the victim named Damptey as the father. He fled into hiding after police were alerted. Christiana helped track him down in Suhum amid threats of her own arrest. A relative reported the case to Nkawkaw police.
But the suspect’s brother-in-law, a pastor in Nkawkaw, pushed for an out-of-court settlement. This led to Damptey’s release from custody without the complainant’s knowledge. Two pastors allegedly mediated to keep it quiet.
The town’s Gyaasehene, Nana Attah Boateng; the victim’s uncle and former headteacher Richard Ofori; and relative Kwaku Mpong (pastor at Cherebum and Seraphim Church) reportedly took money from Damptey to free him. Nkawkaw Divisional Police allegedly received GH¢2,500 to drop the case.
Damptey is now walking free, while the victim’s family plans to force an abortion, endangering her life and future. This disregards a child’s rights entirely. How can authorities and community leaders shield a predator like this?
